August 19, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A quiet 4 a.m. commute turned into a harrowing fight for survival at the 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Center station when a 72-year-old retiree was blindsided and shoved onto the subway tracks.
Rooney Thomas, a former limousine driver and guitar player living in Manhattan, was standing on the northbound F and D train platform when he heard a distant argument. Seconds later, an assailant approached him from behind without warning and pushed him directly into the pit.
A Painful Escape Before the Next Train Arrived
The impact of the fall instantly fractured Thomas's collarbone. Distraught bystanders rushed to help, but the excruciating pain made it impossible for them to pull him back onto the platform.
Facing the imminent threat of an oncoming train, Thomas was forced to navigate his own escape. He dragged himself along the roadbed toward the emergency stairs located near the platform signal lights, pulling himself back up to safety just moments before a train rolled into the station. Emergency personnel rushed Thomas to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where doctors treated his severe injury.
Surging Violent Crime Targets NYC Seniors
Police apprehended 40-year-old Francisco Garcia shortly after the incident, charging him with assault and reckless endangerment. Garcia, who has a prior domestic violence arrest from 2023, carried out the attack without an apparent motive.
This attack highlights a alarming spike in violence against seniors within the New York City transit system:
-
Elderly Assaults Surge: NYPD data shows felony assaults against elderly riders spiked 150% in July alone, representing over 20% of all subway felony assaults that month.
-
Overall Transit Crime: Overall crime in the subway system has edged up, with total felony assaults rising sharply across the board.

Reflecting on the attack, Thomas noted that his daily habits will permanently shift. He plans to stay far back from the platform edge on every future ride, warning fellow commuters that the threat down on the tracks is far too real.
