April 15, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The neon lights of a West 116th Street deli usually signal a late-night snack or a quick coffee, but on Monday night, they illuminated a scene of chaos and violence. A typical Harlem evening was shattered when gunfire erupted on one of the neighborhood's busiest commercial corridors, leaving a man bleeding on the pavement as bystanders scrambled for cover.
8:47 P.M.: Terror on 116th Street
The peace was broken just before 9:00 p.m. in front of the deli at 121 West 116th St. According to law enforcement, a 32-year-old man was targeted in a brazen attack that left him with a single gunshot wound to his left leg.
When officers from the 28th Precinct arrived, they found the victim collapsed on the ground. As sirens wailed through the corridor, EMS worked quickly to stabilize the man before rushing him to St. Luke’s Hospital. While he is expected to survive, the psychological scars of the neighborhood are far deeper.
The Man in the Purple Sweater
As the victim fought for his life, the shooter was already making his escape. Witnesses described a chillingly calm getaway, with the gunman fleeing on foot, heading westbound toward the shadows of the side streets.
The NYPD has released a description of the suspect still walking the streets:
-
Appearance: Dark-complexioned male.
-
Clothing: A distinctive purple sweater and dark-colored pants.
A Neighborhood Under Tape
By 9:00 p.m., the vibrant block was transformed into a ghost town of yellow tape and flashing blue lights. Foot-traffic was diverted as detectives combed the sidewalk for shell casings and searched for any surveillance footage that might have captured the face of the "Purple Sweater Shooter."
As of Tuesday morning, the motive remains a total mystery. Was it a dispute gone wrong, or a random act of violence? Police aren't saying—and the shooter remains at large.
