The Department of Transportation is rolling out a massive $3.5 to $4 billion initiative to overhaul the stretch running through Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and Downtown Brooklyn between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street. This critical corridor, widely recognized as BQE Central, houses the infamous triple cantilever—a tiered structure clinging to the side of a cliff, carrying daily traffic on two levels while supporting the pedestrian Brooklyn Heights Promenade on top.

Unlike previous proposals that envisioned covering the cantilever with expansive greenspace, the current strategy focuses strictly on bringing the existing configuration into a state of good repair to secure another four decades of operational safety. City officials emphasize that waiting for a flawless alternative is no longer an option as structural wear-and-tear intensifies under the weight of roughly 130,000 vehicles daily—far exceeding the original capacity projections from seven decades ago.

To keep traffic moving without displacing thousands of vehicles onto local residential streets during construction, the blueprint incorporates temporary bypass structures. One two-level bypass will be constructed parallel to the cantilever over Furman Street, designed to remain low-profile and tucked out of view. A second alignment will address the Queens-bound side near the Brooklyn Bridge approach, with engineers actively refining designs to minimize community impact.

Funding remains a primary hurdle as officials navigate the financial requirements independently to bypass lengthy federal review cycles. While city budget allocations provide an initial baseline, leadership faces the formidable challenge of securing remaining capital to execute the project ahead of scheduled construction milestones leading toward the next decade.
