July 6, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY A quiet Sunday morning in Brooklyn turned into a battle for survival when a massive, fast-moving inferno ripped through a residential block, leaving multiple homes charred and forcing firefighters to pull off a desperate rescue of one of their own.

Just as New Yorkers were breathing a sigh of relief with temperatures dropping to the low 70s following a brutal three-day, 100-degree heatwave, disaster struck in Bushwick.

Here is how a routine morning erupted into a chaotic, multi-home emergency.

From a First-Floor Spark to a Three-Alarm Nightmare

The emergency began just before 7:20 a.m. at 62 Covert Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames bursting from the first floor of a three-story, wood-frame building.

In neighborhood blocks tightly packed with older wooden structures, fire spreads like wildfire. Before crews could even hook up their lines, the intense flames jumped, swallowing two neighboring houses.

"There was a good amount of black smoke coming from the roof of the building," said nearby resident Carmela Rodriguez, who witnessed the chaos unfold. "They started using their saws and things took off for a little bit."

The emergency quickly escalated to a three-alarm response, bringing a small army of 130 FDNY personnel and emergency vehicles rushing to the scene. Crews aggressively deployed four separate hoselines to battle back the wall of fire, finally bringing the flames under control by 8:30 a.m.

A Mayday Moment: Firefighter Downed Inside the Smoke

As the smoke thickened, the ultimate nightmare scenario for any fire house unfolded: a firefighter went down inside the burning structure.

The elite Firefighter Assist Search Team (FAST)—a specialized unit whose sole, perilous mission is to rescue trapped or injured first responders—was immediately deployed into the burning building.

In a testament to the sheer grit of New York's Bravest, the downed firefighter was successfully found and pulled from the danger zone. Proving just how tough the city's first responders are, the rescued firefighter incredibly refused medical attention at the scene and went right back to supporting his crew.

Miraculously, thanks to the swift actions of the FAST unit and the fast deployment of lines, no injuries to civilians or other emergency personnel were reported.

The Toxic Culprit? Investigating the Cause

While fire marshals are still working to determine the exact origin of the blaze, a familiar and dangerous threat was found at the scene.

A specialized hazardous materials trio had to be called in specifically to safely remove a lithium-ion battery from the charred ruins. These batteries have become a notorious public enemy in New York City, known for failing catastrophically, exploding, and sparking intense, chemical-fueled fires that are exceptionally difficult to extinguish.

The official investigation into whether the battery triggered this specific multi-home disaster remains active.
