June 8, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A massive coalition of New York City’s most powerful legal organizations is staging a coordinated rally in lower Manhattan, sending a direct and urgent message to the nation: The rule of law is under siege, and it's time to fight back.
In an extraordinary show of solidarity, elite attorneys from across the state are ditching their boardrooms for the pavement. Here is what is happening, why it’s happening now, and what it means for the future of American civil rights.
The Details: When and Where?
The high-stakes demonstration is scheduled for June 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Foley Square in Manhattan—the historic epicenter of New York's judicial system.
The event is being spearheaded by a powerhouse alliance of legal organizations, including:
-
The New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA)
-
The New York City Bar Association
-
The New York Council of Defense Lawyers
-
The Metropolitan Black Bar Association
The Theme: "Time to Lawyer Up"
This isn't just a standard protest; it’s a direct call to arms for the legal profession to act as the ultimate check on government overreach. Organizers have dubbed the event’s theme “Time to Lawyer Up,” highlighting the critical role attorneys play in holding those in power accountable to laws that must be fairly enforced and independently judged.
“As lawyers and concerned citizens, it is incumbent upon us to make our voices heard,” said Ronald C. Minkoff, NYCLA President and a primary organizer of the rally. “All the organizations who worked on making this rally happen have helped to amplify this message of solidarity in support of the rule of law, our constitutional democracy and judicial independence.”
Why Flag Day?
The rally is intentionally timed to coincide with Flag Day (traditionally celebrated on June 14), which honors the Second Continental Congress's adoption of the American flag in 1777. By aligning the demonstration with this patriotic milestone, organizers are aiming to reclaim the flag as a symbol of constitutional rights, equal justice, and democracy.
This isn't the first time NYC’s legal community has felt compelled to take a public stand. Last year, hundreds of lawyers flooded Foley Square in a similar, high-profile demonstration to protect the independence of the legal profession against sharp political attacks from the Trump administration.

What to Expect: A Mass Re-Taking of the Oath
This year's event promises to be an intense, visual statement. Attendees have been instructed to arrive in full business attire and come prepared to publicly re-take their formal Lawyer’s Oath—a symbolic renewal of their vow to defend the U.S. Constitution.
Keynote speakers from across the legal spectrum will take the stage to provide actionable steps on how the public and legal professionals can fight for critical battleground issues, including:
-
Immigration reform and migrant protections
-
Voting rights safeguards
-
Systemic civil rights issues
-
Expanding access to critical legal services for low-income citizens
