June 8, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A Sunday evening commute dissolved into absolute pandemonium inside Manhattan’s busiest transit hub when a knife-wielding attacker went on a terrifying, random rampage.

Six innocent bystanders—including a teenager—were left bleeding on the station floor before law enforcement managed to wrestle the suspect to the ground.

Here is everything we know about the bloody assault that has sent shockwaves through New York City just hours before the eyes of the world turn to Madison Square Garden.

Minutes of Pure Mayhem

The horror unfolded just after 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, near the bustling intersection of 33rd Street and 8th Avenue.

According to sources close to the investigation, an emotionally disturbed man allegedly "went berserk," wielding a sharp object and slashing indiscriminately at commuters. The victims, caught completely off guard in the crowded corridor, range in age from 16 to 65.

The madness only ended when alert Amtrak Police officers charged the suspect, tackling him to the ground and taking him into custody.

"I Don’t Feel Safe" — Eyewitnesses Describe the Aftermath

Outside the station, the scene was one of confusion and dread as emergency sirens echoed through Midtown.

Subul Sadaq, a 25-year-old New Jersey resident, was sitting on the steps near Madison Square Garden with her father when the chaos erupted below them.

“We were sitting on the stairs... and there were like some screams, and the food truck guy had a towel around his ear and he was bleeding,” Sadaq recalled, visibly shaken. “We saw two people get out into the ambulance. We didn’t know what was happening. It’s really scary, I don’t feel safe.”

All six victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital. While the 65-year-old victim is reportedly in serious condition, authorities expect all of those injured to survive.

A Security Nightmare on the Eve of the NBA Finals

The timing of the attack couldn't be worse for city officials. The bloody incident occurred a mere 24 hours before Madison Square Garden—which sits directly on top of Penn Station—is set to host Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

The high-stakes game is already a logistical security headache, with both President Donald Trump and Mayor Zohran Mamdani expected to be in attendance. In the wake of the stabbings, security cordons around the arena are expected to be locked down tighter than ever.

City Leaders Respond

The city’s top officials quickly issued statements to assure a rattled public that the situation was contained.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed he had been fully briefed on what he called a "horrific" incident:

"My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence... I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect."

Governor Kathy Hochul also weighed in, fiercely condemning the rampage as an “act of horrific violence.”

Amtrak officials have stated that despite the active crime scene and ongoing investigation, train services have not been impacted. However, commuters are advised to expect a heavy, highly visible police presence throughout the area.
