June 2, 2025 Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY — Brooklyn's beloved Dumbo Drop made its highly anticipated return on May 31, transforming Washington Street into a whimsical spectacle as thousands of tiny toy elephants parachuted from rooftops. This annual event drew hundreds of spectators to the iconic cobblestone block, nestled beneath the majestic Manhattan Bridge, all to raise vital funds for Dumbo’s Title I public schools: P.S. 307 Elementary and The Dock Street School for STEAM Studies.

The Dumbo Drop isn't just a quirky neighborhood tradition; it's a powerful display of community spirit, combining playful entertainment with a serious commitment to local education.

A Sky-High Extravaganza with a Purpose

Attendees flocked to two separate shows, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., each costing $15 per person. Tickets included a souvenir toy elephant featuring a parachute designed by artist Zeph Farmby, a prime viewing spot for the drop, and an entry into the event's prize sweepstakes.

Before the grand descent, ticket holders were treated to a lively atmosphere. The Jelly provided live music, while Dumbo the Elephant photo booths offered perfect Instagrammable moments. Foodies delighted in the Taste of DUMBO restaurant row, sampling local bites and drinks. The Brooklyn Diamonds showcased their impressive dance drills, and the all-female drumming group Fogo Azul brought rhythmic energy to the cobblestone street as the toy elephants gracefully parachuted around them.

Beyond the ticketed drops, a free Dumbo Archway Party buzzed with activity from 4 to 7 p.m. This family-friendly zone boasted over 20 activities, a bouncy slide, a beer garden, and an array of Dumbo's culinary delights, ensuring there was something for everyone.

Community Voices: Why the Dumbo Drop Matters

For many, the Dumbo Drop is a cherished annual ritual. Brooklynites Dione and Scott Lomando finally experienced the magic after years of missing out. "We wanted to do it for years and always find out the day after, the week after," Scott shared. "So, I’m just really, really happy that we were able to stumble upon it in time this year and get tickets." The couple, eagerly awaiting the 7 p.m. drop, embraced the event's lighthearted spirit. "I just love any kind of festivity like this," Scott added. "[It’s an] excuse to be silly. It’s gonna be fun.”

Dione highlighted the event's impactful fundraising aspect. "I work for an education access non-profit, and anything that has a focus on improving education outcomes in New York City, I’m very excited about,” she told Brooklyn Paper.

Annabelle Babilonia from Crown Heights, attending to cheer on her daughter, Ava, a dancer with the Brooklyn Diamonds, was captivated by the experience. "It was beautiful. It was something different," Babilonia remarked. "It was actually my first time being here. I never knew that they had a Dumbo Drop. Now I got introduced to something I had no idea about, and it was pretty cool.”

Alexandria Sica, president of the Dumbo Improvement District, emphasized the event's significance. "Where else would you see elephants flying through the sky?" Sica posed to Brooklyn Paper, highlighting the unique charm of the event set against the backdrop of the Manhattan Bridge and historic Dumbo buildings. "Our most remarkable sight in all of Brooklyn is the Manhattan Bridge between these gorgeous old buildings. We use this event to benefit our local schools.”

Jenny Premon of Queens, who took the day off to attend after discovering the event on social media, echoed the sentiment of giving back. “I just want to celebrate this moment because this is something so special," Premon said. "It is so wonderful for this kind of event to help support the students. A lot of funding is cut, so this is a great opportunity for us to help contribute, be charitable, and have fun at the same time.”
