June 4, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The numbers are in, and they are absolutely staggering.
New York City just accomplished something thought completely impossible a few short years ago. According to a blockbuster report released by the NYPD on June 3, 2026, the Big Apple has officially plunged into its safest period in modern history, shattering all-time records for the lowest number of murders ever recorded for the first five months of a year.
But don't celebrate just yet. While the headlines scream about a safer city, a terrifying undercurrent of violence is quietly exploding behind closed doors.
The Body Count Plummets: A Record-Breaking Spring
For decades, skeptics claimed New York would never return to its safest eras. The new data completely destroys that narrative.
Year-to-date, murders across the five boroughs have plummeted by a jaw-dropping 20.9% compared to last year. Only 102 homicides were recorded through May, down from 129 during the same period last year. This doesn't just beat previous safe-streaks—it completely obliterates the former record lows of 113 set back in 2014 and 2017.
The peace extended directly into May, which shattered previous records for shooting lows. The city saw just 51 shooting incidents and 58 victims, proving that the relentless tide of gun violence is finally being pushed back. Overall major crime plummeted 10.6% citywide for the month, with 1,147 fewer victims than this time last year.
How the Streets Were Cleared
This historic drop didn't happen by accident. It is the result of a ruthless, data-driven war on the city's most violent elements.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that the NYPD’s "precision policing" strategy has systematically dismantled the networks flooding the streets with illegal firepower. So far this year, detectives have executed 20 massive gang takedowns and successfully seized nearly 2,000 guns out of the hands of criminals.
“These accomplishments are the result of a precision policing approach that follows the data, goes after guns, takes down gangs, and puts our officers where and when they are needed most,” Tisch declared.
The victories cut deep into almost every sector of the city:
-
Retail Theft: Down 15%
-
Public Housing Crime: Down nearly 12%
-
Reported Rapes: Down 10.4%
-
Transit Crime: Down 6.5%

The Dark Reality: The Crimes That Are Rocketing Upward
But look beneath the shiny statistics, and a much more sinister picture emerges. While the streets are clearing, certain violent crimes are spiraling completely out of control.
Felony assaults continued their relentless, years-long climb, ticking up again in May. The forces driving this surge are deeply disturbing. Since 2020, specific types of brutal assaults have skyrocketed across New York:
-
Domestic Violence Incidents: Up a staggering 54%
-
Assaults on NYPD Officers: Up a massive 103%
-
Assaults on Government Workers: Up a horrifying 200%
A Powder Keg of Hate
Even more alarming is a massive, terrifying spike in bias-motivated attacks. Hate crimes in New York City mutated upward by a shocking 74.4% last month compared to May 2025.
The surge is being fueled almost entirely by an explosion of antisemitism and religious targeting. Reported attacks against Jewish New Yorkers surged by 70.8% (41 incidents vs. 24 last May), while hate crimes targeting Muslim New Yorkers jumped by 66.7%.
New York City may be celebrating a historic victory against killers and gangs, but the war for the city's soul—and the safety of its most vulnerable citizens—is far from over.
