June 18, 2026 NEW YORK, NY New York is supposed to be celebrating. For the first time in 53 years, the Larry O’Brien Trophy belongs to Manhattan. But before the confetti could even be swept off the streets of the Canyon of Heroes, Knicks owner James Dolan did what he does best: he opened his mouth and sent a shockwave straight through the fan base.
The Knicks are NBA champions, but the party might be short-lived. Behind the scenes, a financial storm is brewing that threatens to rip this historic roster to shreds before next season even tips off.
The $200 Million Problem: Inside the Knicks' Salary Cap Crisis
While fans are planning parade routes, team president Leon Rose is staring down a mathematical nightmare. The core that brought glory back to Madison Square Garden is elite, but they are incredibly expensive.
Take a look at the massive payroll commitments already locked in for next year:
| Player | Next Season Salary |
| Karl-Anthony Towns | $57.0 Million |
| OG Anunoby | $42.5 Million |
| Jalen Brunson | $37.7 Million |
| Mikal Bridges | $33.4 Million |
| Josh Hart | $20.9 Million |
| Miles McBride & Jose Alvarado | Combined Core Depth |
| TOTAL FOR 8 PLAYERS | $200 Million |
Here is the kicker: the NBA’s dreaded second apron is strictly set at $222 million.
Do the math. The Knicks have a microscopic $22 million left to fill out the remaining seven roster spots.
"Suicidal" — Dolan Warns of a Mass Exodus
Appearing on WFAN, Dolan didn’t mince words about the looming June 30 free agency deadline. While he claims he wants to keep the championship magic alive, he made it clear that the NBA’s punitive luxury tax rules have put him in a corner.
"If we could bring back the whole team, exactly as is, why wouldn’t you?" Dolan said. "I don’t know if we’ll be able to… We’re willing to stretch, but there are certain things in the NBA that you’d have to be suicidal to do. One of them is the second apron. Cannot go into the second apron."

Dolan’s decree means that some of the most beloved postseason heroes are likely good as gone. Defensive anchor Mitchell Robinson and sharpshooter Landry Shamet are both staring down free agency, and with Dolan refusing to cross that financial red line, they will almost certainly be forced to find new homes.
Can Leon Rose Work More Magic?
The mandate from the top is clear: I’ll write a big check, but I won’t ruin the franchise's future to do it. Crossing into the second apron severely cripples a team's ability to trade draft picks, sign buyout candidates, and build a sustainable roster.
The savior of this situation has to be Leon Rose. The mastermind who engineered this championship blueprint now faces his toughest challenge yet. He has to construct a title-defending bench using pocket change and veteran minimum contracts.
The Knicks finally reached the mountaintop, but the business of the NBA waits for no one. Can New York survive the modern salary cap, or will this historic championship squad be a one-hit wonder? Free agency fires up on June 30, and the clock is ticking.
