August 13, 2026 NEW YORK, NY NYC high schoolers just hit the ultimate arts jackpot.

City Hall is rolling out an extraordinary ticket lottery offering local teenagers the chance to score over 2,000 completely free seats to some of Broadway's hottest, most sought-after productions. But while only 2,100 lucky students will nab those prized golden tickets, nobody is walking away empty-handed.

In fact, the runner-up prize might actually be the bigger deal.

Every Entrant Takes Home a Golden Ticket

Every single high school student who enters the lottery will automatically receive a free two-month membership to the Theatre Development Fund (TDF).

This VIP perk unlocks massive discounts on tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway performances—typically dropping prices down to just $20 to $40—along with free or heavily discounted admission to over 20 iconic cultural institutions across the city, including:

• The Metropolitan Museum of Art

• Carnegie Hall

• The Brooklyn Museum

• MoMA PS1

• New York City Ballet

• The Bronx Museum

Even if students miss the initial lottery deadline, City Hall confirmed that any NYC student in grades 9 through 12 can still claim the free two-month TDF membership through September 13.

Announced at New York City Center in Midtown, the lottery gives public and nonpublic high school students across all five boroughs a shot at up to two free tickets to major hit shows, including:

• In the Heights

• Stranger Things: The First Shadow

• The Great Gatsby

• Buena Vista Social Club

• Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)

With Broadway tickets averaging around $131 per admission last season according to Broadway League data, the initiative aims to break down the financial walls that keep local youth from experiencing world-class theater right in their backyard.

How To Enter Before Time Runs Out

The clock is officially ticking. High school students must submit their entry before the 10 a.m. Monday deadline.

• Public School Students: Must provide their OSIS number to enter.

• Nonpublic School Students: Can register using their official school email address.

• Winners Announced: All ticket winners will be notified on September 1.

City Hall framed the initiative as just the start of a broader, term-long commitment to expanding arts access for young New Yorkers, backed by $323 million in funding for the Department of Cultural Affairs and the newly created Cultural Stability Fund.
