September 8, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY The joyous rhythms of Brooklyn’s annual Caribbean celebrations dissolved into horror early Monday morning when a massive pre-dawn brawl erupted into a brutal stabbing spree, leaving four men hospitalized and one fighting for his life just moments before the J'Ouvert festivities were slated to begin.
The violence flared at approximately 5:45 AM near Carroll Street and Utica Avenue in Crown Heights. Officers responding to an emergency 911 dispatch discovered three men bleeding heavily from severe puncture wounds. A 36-year-old victim suffered a deep facial puncture, while two others—aged 32 and 23—sustained critical stab wounds to the neck. Emergency responders rushed all three to Kings County Hospital, where the 32-year-old remains in critical condition. A fourth victim, a 20-year-old man suffering from a severe slash wound to the chin, managed to transport himself to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The bloody outbreak strikes a painful blow against desperate municipal efforts to tame the historic parade's recurring dark side. Just days prior to the incident, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced that authorities would forcefully wrap up celebrations a half-hour earlier than previous years in a direct attempt to curb persistent gun and knife violence that has plagued the route.
The heightened security measures followed a violent 2025 event marred by multiple shootings that forced police to prematurely shutter the festivities. Despite targeted law enforcement crackdowns, increased lighting, and weapons screening checkpoints along the parade perimeter, the deadly tradition of pre-dawn street brawls struck again.
Investigators have yet to make any arrests in connection with the early-morning stabbing rampage, and the investigation remains active.
