October 14, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A political civil war has erupted in the nation's largest city as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces a fierce mutiny from the very democratic socialist movement that swept him into power.

At the center of the storm is NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch—and an explosive controversy surrounding federal immigration agents, violent street protests, and accusations of police misconduct.

Despite mounting pressure, public ultimatums, and open condemnation from high-profile allies, Mayor Mamdani firmly drew a line in the sand on Tuesday, declaring he has "no plans" to remove Tisch from her post as head of the department.

Speaking to reporters shortly before attending a solemn memorial ceremony in Battery Park City, Mamdani stood by his choice for police commissioner, pointing to a record of systemic reform and historical drops in violent crime under their shared tenure.

"Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that," Mamdani stated, highlighting her work in root-and-branch corruption reform within the upper ranks of the NYPD.

The mayor emphasized that during their 10 months leading the city together, New York had recorded the lowest numbers of murders, shootings, and shooting victims in its modern history.

However, those achievements have done little to soothe the rage brewing within his political base.

The Trigger: An ICE Shooting and Violent Street Clashes

The current rift blew open following an Oct. 8 incident in Marble Hill, where federal immigration agents shot a man identified as Oscar Bergal while his 5-year-old child was inside his vehicle.

As outraged New Yorkers took to the streets in protest, the NYPD’s response triggered an immediate political backlash.

The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) issued a fiery statement accusing NYPD officers of acting as shields for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and mistreating peaceful demonstrators.

Among those allegedly assaulted during the protests was Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist candidate running for New York’s 13th Congressional District with Mamdani's endorsement. Chevalier claimed officers shoved her violently to the ground.

She joined a chorus of voices demanding the immediate removal of Commissioner Tisch and the disbanding of the NYPD’s controversial Strategic Response Group (SRG).

"The NYPD’s Strategic Response Group must be disbanded as quickly as possible, and Commissioner Tisch must step down," Chevalier declared in an uncompromising statement.

Outrage Over Victim's Criminal History

Further fueling the activist backlash was Commissioner Tisch's public disclosure of Bergal's criminal record during a press conference following the shooting.

Socialist lawmakers and campaign organizations accused Tisch of attempting to legitimize federal violence against immigrants and delegitimize public outrage.

A collective statement signed by 17 socialist state lawmakers and Democratic nominees—including state Sens. Julia Salazar, Jabari Brisport, and Kristen Gonzalez—demanded an end to NYPD cooperation with ICE, threating calls for Tisch's firing if she refused to comply.

"Instead of justifying ICE terrorism, Tisch must end NYPD complicity with ICE and ensure that the NYPD is not used as a weapon against New Yorkers exercising their right to free speech," the NYC-DSA asserted.

The NYPD swiftly pushed back on accusations of bias, maintaining that releasing prior criminal records during major incident briefings is standard administrative procedure and routine practice for media transparency.

Walking a Treacherous Political Tightrope

For Mayor Mamdani, the standoff presents an escalating political crisis.

While he has personally denounced the federal operation, called for the abolition of ICE, and described any physical force against protesters as "unacceptable," his insistence on maintaining Tisch at the helm of the NYPD exposes a deepening ideological divide between City Hall and his socialist base.

Mamdani reiterated his long-standing commitment to dismantle the NYPD's Strategic Response Group, promising concrete details in the coming weeks while noting that SRG officers were not the units assigned to the Marble Hill protests.

Standing Together in the Shadow of Tragedy

Shortly after delivering his defense of Tisch, Mamdani stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the commissioner at the annual Police Memorial Wall unveiling in Battery Park City.

The solemn ceremony added 42 fallen department members to the memorial wall—41 of whom lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses, alongside Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, who was killed in a Midtown mass shooting last year.

"The work of being an NYPD officer demands immense sacrifice," Mamdani told the crowd, honoring the families of the fallen. "Every day, our officers wake up and choose to take on an enormous burden, to risk their lives for strangers that they’ve never met."

While unity was on display at the memorial, the storm brewing in City Hall signals that the battle over the future of policing, ICE, and political loyalty in New York City is only just beginning.
