May 1, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY A quiet Brooklyn neighborhood is on edge today as detectives from the Special Victims Unit launch a massive manhunt for a predator who vanished into the shadows after a brutal early-morning assault.

The NYPD has pulled back the curtain on a terrifying encounter that took place in the heart of Flatlands, releasing clear video footage of a man they say is responsible for a heinous crime against a teenager just weeks ago.

A Setup in the Shadows

The nightmare began around 5:00 a.m. on April 16 near the intersection of East 56th Street and Mill Lane. Sources close to the investigation reveal that the victim, a vulnerable 18-year-old woman, didn’t walk into this trap with a stranger. She had met the man previously, a detail that makes the betrayal of the subsequent attack all the more gut-wrenching.

After meeting up, police say the man lured her back to an apartment. It was behind those closed doors that the encounter turned into a violent sexual assault.

The Narrow Escape

In a display of incredible bravery, the young woman managed to break free from her attacker and flee the scene on her own. She sought medical treatment at a local hospital via private means before reporting the horror to the 63rd Precinct.

This incident highlights a disturbing trend in the area. Crime data shows that rape cases in the precinct have crept up this year, with seven reported cases as of April 26, compared to six during the same period in 2025.

Do You Recognize This Man?

Before the attack, the suspect was caught on high-resolution surveillance footage casually strolling through a convenience store. Police are hoping his distinct outfit or gait will lead to a positive ID.

  • Headwear: Black baseball cap with a prominent white logo.
