June 26, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The NYPD is facing a massive shakeup that reads straight out of a crime thriller. Just 24 hours after federal agents and Internal Affairs swarm his Upper Manhattan home, one of the department's most powerful commanders has officially called it quits.

Assistant Chief James McCarthy—the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Manhattan South—has abruptly filed for retirement.

But he might not get a clean getaway.

The 30-Day Countdown Begins

McCarthy’s sudden paperwork submission on Thursday has triggered a high-stakes, 30-day race against the clock. By law, the NYPD now has exactly one month to wrap up its investigation.

The burning question remains: Will McCarthy be allowed to walk away with his full pension and benefits, or will the department block his retirement and hit him with administrative charges?

Interestingly, time was already running out for the top cop. Sources reveal that McCarthy was already facing mandatory retirement by November 2026 due to department age limits. The raid just seems to have accelerated his exit strategy.

Bribery, Badges, and Secret Warrants

This isn’t just a minor administrative hiccup. McCarthy is allegedly the target of a massive, multi-year corruption probe focusing on bribery and other official misconduct.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that McCarthy has already been stripped of his gun and badge, placed on modified duty, and swiftly replaced by Assistant Chief Melissa Eger of Staten Island.

The Iceberg Goes Deeper

If you think this stops at McCarthy, think again. The June 24 raids sent shockwaves all the way to the top of the department's hierarchy. Sources confirm that investigators also targeted the homes and properties of two major former NYPD heavyweights:

  • Jeffrey Maddrey: The former Chief of Department.

  • Tarik Sheppard: The past Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

"A Criminal Investigation"

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch didn't mince words on Wednesday morning, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that the department is working hand-in-hand with federal prosecutors to clean house.

“This morning, members of the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI executed search warrants as part of a criminal investigation being pursued by the NYPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York," Tisch stated. "The investigation is ongoing and concerns conduct by former and current members of the NYPD.”

With the feds and the Southern District of New York (SDNY) leading the charge, this unfolding scandal is bound to get much uglier before the dust finally settles. Stay tuned.
