Reginald Newkirk, 54, was taken into custody on October 2 for alleged criminal possession of a controlled substance. While sitting inside a cell at the 67th Precinct, awaiting his day in court before a judge, his condition drastically deteriorated.
Just after 2 p.m. on Saturday, officers called paramedics, claiming Newkirk had become suddenly ill in the lockup. Emergency Medical Services rushed him directly to Kings County Hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, Newkirk remained in critical care through the night until he was pronounced dead on Sunday.
