July 1, 2025 BROOKLYN, NY – A veteran transit worker was brutally assaulted last Saturday in a Brooklyn subway station, sparking outrage from the Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 100, which is demanding increased security and tougher prosecution of those who attack its members.
Marshalee Reid, 51, suffered facial lacerations and a swollen hand after reportedly being jumped by two female suspects who police say bypassed the turnstile. According to authorities, the unprovoked attack occurred when Reid, a station agent, simply informed the individuals they needed to pay their fare.
"This here is just a senseless crime," stated Robert Kelly of TWU Local 100. "This is merely a station agent doing their job, performing customer service, when she was attacked, unprovoked."
A Growing Crisis: Attacks on Transit Workers
The TWU asserts that assaults on its members are a near-daily occurrence, highlighting a escalating crisis for frontline transit employees. The union is urgently calling for a significant increase in the presence of both NYPD and MTA police officers across the transit system.
In addition to enhanced policing, the TWU is pushing for district attorneys across New York City to vigorously prosecute individuals who commit these crimes, sending a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing safety concerns faced by transit workers who are often on the front lines, ensuring the smooth operation of the city's vital public transportation system.

The union's demands reflect a growing frustration with what they perceive as a lack of adequate protection and accountability for those who assault their members.
