July 13, 2025 New Hyde Park, NY – A routine Saturday night in Queens turned into a fatal pursuit that ended tragically in Nassau County, leaving a 15-year-old robbery suspect dead and a community shaken. The incident, which began with a knifepoint robbery, culminated in a devastating e-bike collision during a police chase, highlighting ongoing concerns about public safety and the perils of high-speed pursuits.
From Queens Robbery to Long Island Tragedy
The chain of events began around 8 p.m. Saturday when NYPD officers responded to a report of a knifepoint robbery on Hillside Avenue in Queens. Upon arrival, officers encountered the unidentified 15-year-old suspect, who, instead of complying, attempted to evade capture on an e-bike. This initiated a police pursuit that crossed borough lines and ventured into New Hyde Park.
The chase came to a sudden and horrific end at the intersection of Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue. The suspect's e-bike collided with a 2015 Lexus SUV. Authorities confirmed the teenager suffered severe bodily trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.
Hit-and-Run Arrest Adds Another Layer to the Ordeal
Further complicating the tragic scene, the driver of the Lexus SUV, identified as 28-year-old Ruyan Ali, was arrested after allegedly fleeing the crash site. Ali also faces charges for unlicensed operation of a vehicle. Video footage from the aftermath grimly depicts the mangled remains of the e-bike and significant front-end damage to the SUV, a stark testament to the force of the impact.
Community Speaks Out: A Dangerous Intersection?
For residents living near the crash site, the sound of screeching tires and emergency sirens is, unfortunately, nothing new. Karina Lopez, a local resident, recounted her experience: "We were having dinner and, I noticed the sound of a crashed car, and then the car alarm just started beeping right after that. Not too long after that we heard the emergency vehicles." She added, "We used to
have in this intersection or the next intersection down here, there used to be car accidents all the time." Her testimony underscores a long-standing concern about the safety of this particular intersection, raising questions about potential traffic calming measures or improved signage.
Investigations Underway
Both the NYPD Force Investigation Division and Nassau County Police are actively investigating the robbery and the fatal crash. As authorities piece together the full sequence of events, this incident serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of police pursuits, especially when involving young suspects and fast-moving vehicles like e-bikes in urban and suburban environments.
