September 2, 2025 BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — What began as a day of vibrant celebration and community spirit at the annual West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn ended in a night of chaos and violence. Despite a massive police presence, at least five people were shot and two were slashed on or near the parade route, casting a dark shadow over one of the city's most beloved events.

The string of violent incidents unfolded in less than two hours on Monday night, following the conclusion of the daytime festivities. According to the NYPD, all gunshot victims, including a 14-year-old, were shot between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. While most are listed in stable condition, the attacks have left the community shaken.

In addition to the shootings, police reported two separate slashings around 6 p.m. on Eastern Parkway. One person was taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the other refused medical attention at the scene. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with any of the attacks.

The violence is particularly disturbing given the unprecedented security measures put in place for the event. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch had previously called it the "largest police deployment of the year," surpassing even New Year's Eve and July 4th security details. Spectators were screened at 13 checkpoints along Empire Boulevard and Nostrand Avenue with handheld metal detectors.

City officials, including Mayor Eric Adams, had expressed confidence in the security plan ahead of the parade, noting there were no "specific or credible threats." However, the events of Monday night have renewed concerns about safety at major public gatherings.

Last year's parade was also marred by violence, including a shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead. Police had attributed that incident to gang-related activity. While it's too early to tell if a similar motive is behind the most recent attacks, the repeated outbreaks of violence at the event are a stark reminder of the challenges facing the city.
