June 27, 2025 PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Brooklyn, NY – A late-night dispute at a local barbecue tragically ended in murder Wednesday, June 25, 2025, just blocks from the Barclays Center. Police are actively searching for the man responsible for the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Tamika Powell.

Powell was discovered by police with a fatal gunshot wound to the head at approximately 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of Carlton Avenue and Pacific Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witness statements, Powell had an argument with a man at a nearby barbecue. Investigators believe this individual, described as wearing beige pants, a white shirt, and a black mask, then followed Powell before shooting her. Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance video in an effort to identify the suspect.

Family members, who had also been at the barbecue, reportedly rushed to the scene upon hearing the news.

The incident unfolded mere blocks east of the Barclays Center, which had hosted the NBA draft earlier that same Wednesday evening. This brazen act of violence in a typically bustling area has left the community shaken.
