Bronx, NY – The community is reeling after the tragic death of 16-year-old Evette Jeffrey, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet outside a Bronx school on Monday afternoon. As Evette was walking home near Home Street and Tinton Avenue in Morrisania, adjacent to Bronx Latin school, gunfire erupted, tragically ending her young life.
The NYPD swiftly launched an investigation, and their efforts led to the arrest of a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday morning. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny announced at a press conference that the suspect was apprehended near Rev. James A. Polite Ave. and East 163rd St. in Longwood as he attempted to flee in a taxi.
Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between rival gangs, KOD (Kreeps on Davidson) and FOE (Forest Over Everything). Preliminary investigations indicate the 14-year-old suspect was involved in a physical altercation at the schoolyard, which escalated. The intended target is believed to be another individual who intervened in the initial fight. Tragically, Evette Jeffrey, who was simply passing by on her scooter after leaving her school a few blocks away, became an unintended victim.
Evette's family is devastated by their sudden and profound loss. Her grandmother, Lizette Ramirez, expressed her anguish and called for accountability, stating, "I don’t forgive you. I hold your family responsible, because they should be watching. She’s forever 16. You took her away from us."
At their family home, Evette's mother, Kristen Abad, and grandmother shared memories of a bright and ambitious young woman. Evette had dreams of becoming a medical technician, cherished her pets, and was looking forward to her college years.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene on Monday night, highlighting the concerning issue of youth violence, noting the suspect's young age and prior concerning behavior. The area around Bronx Latin saw an increased police presence on Tuesday as students arrived, underscoring the community's shock and concern.
