May 4, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The screams for help began just after midnight on Dyckman Street, as a routine Monday morning transformed into a waking nightmare for dozens of families in Inwood.

By the time the smoke cleared, three neighbors were dead, 11 more were rushed to hospitals—five in critical condition—and a community was left asking how a hallway fire could turn so deadly, so fast.

Three Minutes from Life to Death

The first 911 calls hit the switchboard at 12:30 a.m. When FDNY engines roared up to 207 Dyckman St. just three minutes later, they were met with a scene of pure desperation. Residents were clinging to rusted fire escapes, silhouetted against a terrifying orange glow emanating from the windows of the six-story building.

“Our first arriving company... arrived to find multiple people trying to escape via the fire escape,” Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore told reporters at the scene. “This fire was a very serious fire. It unfortunately resulted in many patients.”

The "Open Door" Death Trap

While fire marshals are still digging through the charred remains to find the official cause, fire officials have already identified the "silent killer" that allowed the blaze to consume the building: open doors.

The fire reportedly ignited in a first-floor hallway. Within seconds, the stairwell acted like a chimney, funneling thick, black smoke and superheated gases up to the top floor. As panicked residents fled their homes, many left their apartment doors swinging wide behind them.

"The apartments that had the doors closed had very little impact to no fire," Bonsignore warned. "The apartments that had doors open had more impact. Close the door. It’s an important message we need everybody to understand."

A Community in Mourning

The toll of the three-alarm inferno is staggering:

  • 3 Lives Lost: The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending family notification.

  • 5 Critical Victims: Fighting for their lives at local trauma centers.

  • 100 Displaced: Residents—many in pajamas—watched from the sidewalk as their lives were reduced to ash.

  • 1 Firefighter Injured: Reported to be in stable condition after battling the intense heat.

"I Saw Them on the Fire Escape"

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene of neighbors helping neighbors before the FDNY could even hook up their hoses. While firefighters successfully plucked several people from the building’s exterior, the speed of the smoke meant that for three residents, the exit was blocked before they could even reach the window.

The fire was finally brought under control around 3:00 a.m., but for the 100 people now seeking shelter through the Red Cross, the nightmare is only beginning.

If you have to run from a fire, take one second to pull that door shut. It could be the difference between a smoky hallway and a total catastrophe.
