July 3, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The air is thin at 1,500 feet, but for the world’s most infamous daredevil couple, it was the perfect backdrop for the ultimate romantic stunt—and a wild legal showdown that has New York City captivated.
Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus, 32, stars of the hit Netflix documentary Skywalkers, turned the iconic Midtown skyline into their personal engagement ring on July 1. Cloaked in black and wearing masks, the duo breached the high-security spire on the 105th floor of the Empire State Building around 11:15 a.m.
What followed was a heart-stopping spectacle that shut down the building's massive antenna to protect the pair from frying under powerful radio waves. High above the gridlocked streets, they unfurled a massive black-and-white banner reading:
“If the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
Then, in a move that terrified onlookers and captivated millions, Beerkus dropped to one knee on a narrow platform suspended in the clouds, proposing to Nikolau.
The romance was short-lived. The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit was waiting for them. "Well, you can't be up here," a cop dryly remarked before slapping on the handcuffs.
The Great Courtroom Escape
Fast forward to Thursday at 100 Center Street. Facing a mountain of serious charges—including Burglary, Reckless Endangerment, and Criminal Mischief—the couple walked into court facing potential prison time. Instead, a judge granted them supervised release.
The moment they hit the courthouse doors, chaos erupted.
With a pack of aggressive reporters giving chase through the streets of Lower Manhattan, the breathless couple held hands and sprinted for the Foley Square subway station. When cornered about their motivation for the illegal, high-altitude stunt, Beerkus yelled back over his shoulder:
“We believe in the power of love! It was cold up there.”
He even threw a compliment to his captors, adding, “People were nice there. Police are nice.”
Just before vanishing into the subway depths, the adrenaline-fueled lovers stopped, turned to the flashing news cameras, and locked lips in a passionate, cinematic kiss—proving that not even a night in a New York City holding cell could dampen their flame.
Overcharged or Justly Caught?
The couple's defense attorney, Jason Krinsky, isn’t holding back, claiming the District Attorney is trying to make an example out of the famous thrill-seekers.

"The DA’s office overcharged here," Krinsky insisted to the media, arguing that the stunt was completely safe and inherently positive. "As far as what I’ve seen, it was a message of love, all right? And you know, that’s a nice thing. No one was hurt here."
As for the vertical engagement? Even the lawyer couldn't help but marvel. "Looks like she didn’t say no, and everything went well, so that’s very happy. I mean, come on, what a way to propose. Something you could only dream of."
The "Skywalkers" may be grounded for now as their legal battle plays out, but they've officially cemented their status as Gotham's most fearless—and romantic—outlaws.
