June 22, 2026 THE BRONX, NY A quiet Sunday evening in the Bronx shattered into absolute chaos this weekend when a stolen vehicle became a deadly weapon, turning a routine traffic stop into a frantic, high-stakes battle for survival. By the time the smoke cleared, multiple police officers were hospitalized, an 18-year-old driver was shot, and a neighborhood was left reeling.
The Tracking of a Stolen Kia
The madness began just before 6:00 p.m. when an automated license plate reader flag triggered an alarm: a silver Kia, reported stolen just 24 hours prior, was rolling through Washington Heights.
What followed was a precisely coordinated game of cat-and-mouse. An NYPD helicopter tracked the vehicle from the sky as it crossed the University Heights Bridge, while members of the NYPD’s elite Community Response Team closed in on the ground.
The trap was set outside 380 Fordham Road. But no one anticipated just how far the teenage driver would go to escape.
Seconds from Death: "He Put the Car into Reverse"
Plainclothes officers surrounded the vehicle, shouting commands for the driver and passenger to step out. Instead, the driver slammed the accelerator.
“The driver of the stolen vehicle put the car into reverse, hitting one of the unmarked vehicles, and ultimately hitting multiple members of the NYPD,” reported NYPD Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo.
The scene quickly devolved into pure terror:
-
The Pivot: The driver threw the car into drive, cutting the wheels sharply toward a waiting sergeant and plowing directly into him, throwing him violently to the asphalt.
-
The Leap: Desperate to avoid being crushed, another officer leaped into the air, landing onto the hood of a parked car.
-
The Escape Attempt: With the sergeant pinned on the ground directly in front of the bumper, the driver threw the car into reverse again, threatening to run him over a second time.
With seconds ticking between life and death, an officer positioned on top of the vehicle drew his service weapon and fired through the windshield, striking the 18-year-old driver in the arm and finally bringing the rampage to a halt.
A Systemic Failure?
As the neighborhood processes the violence, shocking details about the teenage suspect have emerged, sparking widespread outrage.

According to police officials, this exact same 18-year-old was arrested just months ago, in February, for shooting another man in the very same precinct. Despite facing heavy felony charges—including attempted felony assault and reckless endangerment—he was back behind the wheel of a stolen car on a Sunday afternoon.
The Aftermath
The teenage driver was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital under police custody and is expected to survive to face a mountain of pending charges.
The injured sergeant and several affected officers were whisked to a nearby trauma center. While they are expected to recover from their physical injuries, the psychological toll of the weekend weighs heavily on the department. This marks the second grave injury to NYPD personnel in a mere 48 hours, following a Friday standoff in Brooklyn where an Emergency Services Unit officer was shot.
The investigation remains ongoing as the Bronx community demands answers on how a previously arrested gunman was allowed back on the streets to wreak such havoc.
