May 14, 2026 BRONX, NY Buying a used car in the Bronx just went from a gamble to a crime scene.

City officials have officially lowered the hammer on Honda of the Bronx, a used auto outlet at 2541 East Tremont Ave., after an explosive investigation uncovered a massive web of "widespread deceptive business practices." If you’ve walked onto that lot recently, you might have been more of a target than a customer.

350 Violations: The Anatomy of a Scam

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) didn't just find a few clerical errors—they found a factory of fraud. The investigation revealed more than 350 violations that paint a chilling picture of how the dealership allegedly operated:

  • The Bait-and-Switch: Advertising one price to get you in the door, then jacked it up the moment you sat down to sign.

  • The "Cancellation Trap": Refusing to give customers the forms or options needed to back out of a deal, essentially locking them into predatory contracts.

  • Shadow Financing: Keeping buyers in the dark about total loan costs and interest rates, leading to "debt traps" that working New Yorkers can't escape.

  • Illegal Operation: The city found the shop was even operating without the proper licensure.

"Life is Hard Enough": City Hall Fires Back

Mayor Zohran Mamdani didn't mince words when announcing the crackdown, labeling the dealership's tactics as "exploitative."

"Buying a used car shouldn’t be a gamble," Mamdani said. "But too many dealerships are baiting working people with one price, then charging another... it is making life even harder for New Yorkers already struggling to get by."

Is Your Refund Waiting?

As part of the settlement, Honda of the Bronx admitted to the wrongdoing and has been ordered to cough up $129,999 in fines and restitution. While the dealership’s Instagram claims they are under "new management," the check is already in the mail for those they burned. The DCWP is mandating that the business provide refunds to affected buyers and overhaul its entire sales process.

A Borough-Wide Crackdown

If you think Honda of the Bronx was an isolated case, think again. Commissioner Samuel A.A. Levine warned that the city is putting these predatory tactics "in the rearview mirror."

The DCWP is currently in the middle of a trial against Victory Mitsubishi/Spartan Auto on Boston Road, an entity they claim has a "long track record of scamming New Yorkers." Over the last five years, the city has clawed back nearly $8.5 million from 106 different dealerships.

The lesson for Bronx drivers? If the deal feels like a trap, it probably is. Check your paperwork, know your rights, and if you were caught in the East Tremont "cancellation trap," it’s time to collect what’s yours.
