March 2, 2026 BRONX, NY The sun hadn’t even fully cleared the horizon over the Concourse on Saturday morning when the screams started. For the residents of 956 Sherman Avenue, the sounds of a typical February dawn were replaced by something far more primal—and far more permanent.
By the time the echoes faded, a family was destroyed, a hallway was painted in crimson, and a 45-year-old man was running for his life.
The Trail of Blood
Just after 6:40 a.m. on February 28, officers from the 44th Precinct arrived at a scene that looked like something out of a horror film. Responding to desperate 911 calls of an "assault in progress," police were met with a sight that stopped them in their tracks: blood smeared across the third-floor hallway, leading like a roadmap to a door that hid a nightmare.
Inside the apartment, the air was heavy with the aftermath of a violent frenzy. Officers found 42-year-old Yesenia Hall suffering from catastrophic wounds to her neck, back, and stomach. Nearby, her 16-year-old son lay bleeding from similar wounds to his back and neck—a teenager caught in the crosshairs of a "bloody rampage" that took place in the very home where he was supposed to be safe.
A Life Stolen, A Hero Survives
The victims were rushed to Lincoln Hospital in a race against the clock. For Yesenia Hall, the clock ran out; she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her son, however, is being hailed as a survivor. Despite the gravity of his injuries, he is currently in stable condition and is expected to pull through.
The Manhunt and the Charges
The man police say is responsible for this carnage didn't stay to face the music. Juan Rivas, 45, who shared the apartment with Hall, allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack.

His freedom was short-lived. Law enforcement moved with surgical precision, tracking Rivas down and taking him into custody before the day was out. He now faces a laundry list of charges that reflect the sheer brutality of the morning’s events:
-
Murder
-
Attempted Murder
-
Manslaughter
-
Assault
-
Criminal Possession of a Weapon
As the Bronx community grapples with the shock of such a senseless loss, one question remains: what could drive a man to turn a home into a slaughterhouse in the span of a single morning?
