July 28, 2026 QUEENS, NY A quiet Tuesday morning in Elmhurst shattered into absolute chaos when a hammer-wielding maniac forced his way into a local school, terrorized staff, and left an eight-year-old child hospitalized. The horrifying incident is now under active investigation by the NYPD as a potential hate crime amidst a frightening surge in anti-Semitic violence across New York City.

A Horrifying Chase Into a Safe Haven

Just before 10:50 a.m., horror unfolded outside the Jewish Institute of Queens, a school serving children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade on Woodhaven Boulevard.

According to law enforcement sources, a 42-year-old emotionally disturbed man brandishing a hammer chased a terrified woman off the street and straight through the doors of the educational facility.

Heroic school security personnel reacted instantly, intercepting the armed intruder and successfully disarming him before he could advance further into the building.

An 8-Year-Old Child Injured in the Scuffle

The danger, however, was far from over. As security officers attempted to physically escort the suspect toward the exit, the man violently broke free.

In a desperate bid to escape, the suspect shoved an 8-year-old boy directly into a fence. The child suffered a severe laceration to his head. Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene and transported the young victim to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

Officers from the NYPD's 112th Precinct responded rapidly to 911 calls from school staff, taking the suspect into custody at the scene. Criminal charges remain pending as detectives piece together the timeline.

A Serial Offender Back on the Streets

Law enforcement sources reveal that the suspect—whose identity has not yet been publicly released—has an extensive criminal record and known gang affiliations in East New York.

Shockingly, this dangerous encounter marks his third major run-in with police in less than a month:

  • July 8: Arrested in Queens for petit larceny.

  • July 24: Cuffing in Manhattan after allegedly stealing $1,300 worth of merchandise from Bergdorf Goodman.

  • July 28: Arrested at the Jewish Institute of Queens following the hammer attack.

Rising Tensions and Political Fallout

This shocking intrusion comes during a alarming wave of targeted incidents against Jewish New Yorkers. Just days prior, a suspect was arrested on the Upper West Side after a violent spree where he attacked a Jewish man with a screwdriver while shouting "Allah Akhbar."

The escalating violence has sparked intense political debate regarding public safety and rhetoric surrounding international conflicts. While law enforcement has found no direct link between political statements and these specific acts of violence, several local officials are calling on City Hall to address the rising hostility and bolster security for vulnerable community institutions.

City officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting religious institutions and ensuring that every neighborhood remains safe, emphasizing that threats against targeted communities will be met with the full force of the law.
