August 11, 2025 BROOKLYN NY — A festive summer block party in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood took a tragic turn this weekend, leaving one man dead and a community in shock. What began as a vibrant Saturday celebration with music, food, and family fun, ended in gunfire and chaos.
A Night of Celebration Ends in Tragedy
According to neighbors, the party on 57th Street near 4th Avenue was in full swing, with residents enjoying a typical summer evening. "Everybody was out, everybody was having fun, everybody was partying, barbecuing," one neighbor told local news outlets.
However, the festive atmosphere was shattered when gunshots rang out. Victor Vizcaino, a resident who was with his family at the time, described the sudden shift in mood. “There were many people, including my family, outside eating and playing dominos,” he said. “Things were winding down, cars were starting to come back onto the street, then before you knew it, four gunshots. People started running down the streets.”
The victim, identified by police as 45-year-old Roberto Cuevas, a Sunset Park resident, was shot in the back. NYPD sources indicate that Cuevas and the shooter had a heated argument earlier in the evening. Cuevas was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Community in Disbelief as Investigation Continues
The shooting has left the community grappling with a mix of grief and disbelief. Vizcaino captured the overwhelming sentiment, stating, "It was so crazy to see, the overwhelming feeling on the street was disbelief that someone would do this while kids and families were outside."
