June 20, 2025 Queens, NY - A shocking and brutal hate crime unfolded on a Queens subway car early Wednesday morning, leaving a Muslim woman with severe injuries and sparking renewed alarm about anti-Muslim violence in New York City. This attack, allegedly carried out by a man with a documented history of targeting the Muslim community, highlights a disturbing and escalating pattern.
Subway Horror: Woman Brutally Attacked in Apparent Hate Crime
The harrowing ordeal began around 4 a.m. on an E train. A 55-year-old Muslim woman, whose name has not been released, was reportedly accosted by 34-year-old Naved Durrni. According to Eyewitness News, Durrni allegedly invaded her personal space and aggressively demanded to know her religious identity, repeatedly asking, "Are you Muslim?"
When the brave victim confirmed her faith, the verbal assault quickly escalated to a physical one. ABC7NY reports that Durrni then unleashed a violent barrage, punching and kicking her repeatedly until the train pulled into the next station. The woman sustained significant injuries, including a concussion, a fractured nose, and severe bruising. Speaking to ABC7NY, she recounted the terrifying moments, stating, "I just said stop, stop but he not stopping." Beyond the physical pain, the attack has left her with deep psychological trauma, struggling with persistent memories of her assailant's face.
Accused Attacker's Troubling History of Anti-Muslim Violence
This isn't Durrni's first alleged act of anti-Muslim behavior. The Daily News revealed a deeply disturbing pattern of past incidents. In June 2021, Durrni reportedly assaulted a Muslim couple. Later that same year, he allegedly attacked another Muslim woman, resulting in a broken nose. The pattern continued as he reportedly followed another woman, brandishing a knife and hurling anti-Muslim slurs. While he was convicted of aggravated harassment for these previous acts, this latest incident underscores a terrifying and ongoing escalation of his violent animosity towards the Muslim community.
Durrni fled the subway car after the attack but was apprehended by police approximately a mile away.
Justice Sought: Hate Crime Charges Filed
Durrni now faces serious charges, including assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment. Given his documented history of targeting Muslim individuals, authorities are treating this case with the utmost seriousness. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
This recent act of violence serves as a stark and painful reminder of the persistent struggle against faith-based hate crimes in our city. What steps do you believe are most critical to address this escalating threat and better protect vulnerable communities?
