August 8, 2025 NEW YORK CITY – A night commute turned into a terrifying fight for survival for one New York woman, who was brutally slashed in a brazen attack on a downtown subway. The victim, a 29-year-old on her way home, fought back against her assailant, earning praise from the very officers now hunting for her attacker.

The incident occurred just after 11:10 p.m. on a northbound No. 3 train as it pulled into the Wall Street station. The suspect, attempting to steal her cell phone, attacked the woman, slashing her on the left arm, left elbow, back, and fingers. According to her sister, Michelle, the victim’s bravery during the struggle was remarkable.

"The police said they were very impressed by her strength," Michelle told reporters.

Despite her severe injuries, the victim was able to hold her own until the suspect fled the scene. She was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where she underwent surgery but is now in stable condition. Police are still searching for the assailant, described as wearing a blue face mask and a gray backpack. No arrests have been made in this case.

This attack follows a separate, also violent, incident that occurred just days earlier. Police have arrested a 21-year-old man, Carlos Rivera, in connection with a stabbing at the Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street station in Chelsea. In that incident, a 25-year-old woman was stabbed in the back as she walked down the stairs to the station. Rivera has been charged with attempted murder and three counts of felony assault.

The two attacks highlight the city's ongoing struggle with transit crime. According to NYPD data, felony assaults in transit have risen by 7.4% compared to the previous year, though robberies are down 8.8% over the same period.

As New Yorkers continue to navigate their daily commutes, this brave woman's story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk below ground.
