April 3, 2026 NEW YORK, NY The battle lines for New York’s 7th Congressional District aren't just being drawn—they’re being set on fire.

On Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders officially threw his weight behind Assembly Member Claire Valdez, sending a shockwave through a primary that has become the ultimate proxy war for the American Left. In a district that bridges the progressive strongholds of western Queens and north Brooklyn, the "Sanders Stamp" might just be the kingmaker Valdez needs.

The Clash of Titans

This isn’t just a local primary; it’s a heavyweight bout between two different visions of progressivism.

  • The "Establishment" Progressive: Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso holds the "home team" advantage, backed by the legendary Nydia Velázquez, Attorney General Letitia James, and heavyweight unions like the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council.

  • The "Insurgent" Socialist: Claire Valdez, a former UAW organizer, is backed by the NYC-DSA, the United Auto Workers, and the city’s most visible socialist firebrand, Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

While Sanders supported Reynoso for Borough President back in 2021, he is clearly switching lanes for this Congressional seat, signaling a desire for a more radical voice in D.C.

"Fight the Oligarchy"

Sanders didn’t mince words in his endorsement. He framed Valdez as the necessary antidote to a rigged system:

"Claire Valdez has the experience and vision we need to take on the oligarchy and fight for unions, Medicare for All, and affordable housing. Congress needs more voices who come from America’s working class."

For Valdez, the endorsement is a full-circle moment. She credited Sanders' previous presidential runs as the reason she became a democratic socialist in the first place, citing her history in low-wage jobs as the fuel for her fire.

Follow the Money (and the Mayor)

The "Mamdani-Sanders" alliance is proving to be a formidable political machine. Mayor Mamdani hasn't just endorsed Valdez; he’s practically shared his DNA with the campaign, lending her his top advisers and appearing in joint fundraising videos.

The strategy seems to be working. Valdez’s campaign dropped a bombshell of its own Thursday, claiming to have raised $750,000 from over 11,200 donors. With an average donation of just $53.73 and zero corporate PAC money, Valdez is betting that a grassroots "political revolution" can outmuscle Reynoso’s long list of institutional endorsements.

What’s on the Line?

As the primary heats up, the stakes couldn't be higher. Valdez is running on a platform that makes "Tax the Rich" and "Abolish ICE" central pillars, while Reynoso represents a more traditional, albeit progressive, coalition.

With the seat wide open for the first time in decades, the question is simple: Will NY-7 follow the path of the party leaders, or will the "Bernie Effect" propel another labor organizer into the halls of power?

One thing is certain: In the 7th District, the status quo is no longer an option.
