October 22, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A routine Tuesday evening commute turned into a nightmare on one of the busiest bridges in the world when a sudden burst of violence ended the life of a hard-working utility employee and loving father.

Around 7:06 p.m. on October 21, Port Authority Police and the NYPD responded to reports of a vehicle crash on the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge. What initially appeared to be a standard traffic collision quickly transformed into a high-stakes homicide investigation.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered 46-year-old Koran Irvine sitting inside his Volkswagen Golf with a gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder. The driver’s side glass had been shattered by gunfire.

Investigators believe the tragedy stemmed from a heated road rage incident following a near-collision between two vehicles on the span.

A Heartbreaking Loss

First responders rushed Irvine to Englewood Medical Center in New Jersey. Despite frantic efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries.

Irvine, a resident of Valley Cottage, New York, was a dedicated employee at Con Edison. His sudden death sent shockwaves through the organization and left his family shattered.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him," Con Edison released in an official statement.

Outside of his work, Irvine was remembered above all as a family man. A GoFundMe page established to support his grieving wife, Patricia, and their children, Lea and Hiro, painted a portrait of a vibrant, loving man whose life revolved around his family.

"Koran was a man full of life, love, and dedication to the people who meant the most to him. His family was his world, and he worked hard every day to provide for and support his wife and children," the fundraiser read. "We will deeply miss Koran’s jokes, his infectious smile, his laughter, and his zest for life. His passing leaves an unimaginable void in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him."

A Manhunt and a Shocking Suspect

Following the shooting, the gunman fled the scene, triggering an intense, multi-agency manhunt across state lines.

The search came to a dramatic conclusion when a suspect surrendered to authorities. Police identified the suspect as 62-year-old Victor Romero—a retired NYPD officer who left the department roughly 25 years ago.

Romero has been taken into custody and formally charged with murder. Port Authority Police confirmed that no other injuries occurred during the incident.

Bridge Gridlock and Ongoing Investigation

The shooting caused massive gridlock during the Tuesday evening rush, forcing authorities to shut down the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge well into the night. Crews worked through the dark to clear the crime scene and gather forensic evidence before fully reopening the lanes by Wednesday morning.

While an arrest has been made, law enforcement officials emphasize that the investigation remains active as detectives piece together the exact sequence of events that led to this deadly encounter.
