July 29, 2025 NEW YORK, NY – A terrifying scene unfolded Monday evening in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, as a Nevada man with a documented mental health history allegedly opened fire inside a prestigious Park Avenue building, leaving four people dead, including an off-duty NYPD officer. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, ended the deadly rampage by taking his own life.

A Cross-Country Journey Ends in Tragedy

According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura, a Las Vegas resident, had recently driven his BMW across the country. His vehicle's movements were tracked from Colorado to New Jersey in the days leading up to the attack. Just after business hours on Monday, Tamura allegedly walked into 345 Park Avenue, an address housing high-profile tenants like the NFL, KPMG, and Blackstone, armed with an M4 rifle.

Commissioner Tisch revealed that surveillance video captured Tamura entering the lobby, turning right, and immediately opening fire on Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working a security detail at the building. Officer Islam was among the four victims tragically killed in the attack. The identities of the other three victims – a man and two women – have not yet been released.

A Deliberate Attack? Motive Under Investigation

After the initial fusillade in the lobby, the gunman reportedly shot a woman taking cover behind a pillar and continued firing at others before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he again opened fire, killing another person.

"We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location," Commissioner Tisch stated. However, officials familiar with the investigation have indicated a potential motive: a note found at the scene reportedly expresses Tamura's anger that his mental illness might be linked to his past football participation. Investigators are now exploring whether this led him to target the building that houses the NFL offices.

Inside Tamura's BMW, investigators discovered a rifle case with rounds, additional ammunition magazines, a loaded revolver, and prescribed medication. The specific type of medication and its purpose were not disclosed. A cell phone also recovered at the scene is being analyzed for further clues.

Community and Former Teammates Stunned by Violence

The sudden and brutal violence sent shockwaves through the typically bustling Midtown area. One man was hospitalized in critical but stable condition with injuries, and four others sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee the building. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that a league employee was seriously hurt in what he called "an unspeakable act of violence," but is now in stable condition.

News of Tamura's alleged involvement has left his former high school football teammates and coach in Southern California reeling. Caleb Clarke, a former classmate, expressed disbelief, stating, "You never would have thought violence was something you’d associate with him. Everything he said was a joke."

Walter Roby, Tamura's former coach, remembered him as a talented, quiet, and well-mannered running back. "I’m just blown away right now," Roby said, echoing the sentiment of many who knew Tamura. Another teammate, Anthony Michael Leon, reiterated the shock, noting that Tamura "never exerted bad energy or a negative attitude."

As the investigation continues to unfold, authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the full picture of this tragic event and determine what drove Tamura to commit such an act of devastating violence.
