July 21, 2025 New York, NY – A late-night attempted robbery in a seemingly peaceful Manhattan park turned violent Saturday, leaving an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer with gunshot wounds. The incident, which occurred near the iconic Little Red Lighthouse in Riverside Park, Washington Heights, has ignited concerns about public safety and drawn a spotlight to the nation's immigration policies.

Officer Wounded in Brazen Attack

Just before 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, the 42-year-old off-duty officer was enjoying the evening with a friend when two individuals on a moped approached them. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a Sunday afternoon press conference alongside Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, detailed the harrowing encounter.

"One male dismounted the scooter, displayed a firearm and approached the two who were just trying to enjoy the city, like so many of us do during the hot evening hour," Mayor Adams stated.

The officer sustained gunshot wounds to the face and forearm but, demonstrating remarkable courage, returned fire. He was quickly transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem and is in stable condition, expected to make a full recovery. Officials noted he is currently communicating through hand gestures.

Swift Response Lauded by Authorities

Francis Russo, Director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection, praised the NYPD's rapid deployment to the challenging riverside location, crediting their quick actions with saving the federal officer's life. "We expect him to make a speedy recovery, and our hearts go out to him and his family," Russo remarked.

Mayor Adams also shared a personal moment, stating, "I just visited the officer as he makes his recovery. His mom and his family members were there, and they thanked the city for their response."

Suspect Apprehended with Extensive Criminal History and Deportation Order

The investigation quickly led to a breakthrough when a person of interest, a 21-year-old male, walked into Bronx Care Hospital at 12:18 a.m. with gunshot wounds to his groin and leg. He was subsequently transferred to Lincoln Hospital for surgery.

Police Commissioner Tisch confirmed that the NYPD is working in conjunction with Customs and Border Protection through the HSI Violent Gang Taskforce to definitively link the individual to the shooting and to locate a second accomplice. She also noted that preliminary findings suggest the officer was not targeted due to his profession.

In a significant development, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson revealed that the apprehended individual had entered the country illegally and was subject to a standing order for deportation. Mayor Adams further elaborated on the suspect's disturbing criminal record, which includes:

  • A December robbery in the Bronx.
  • A January stabbing.
  • Prior arrests for assault and violating an order of protection.
  • An extradition warrant from Massachusetts for kidnapping.

"In less than one year, he has inflicted violence in our city," Mayor Adams asserted, adding, "Once he is charged for last night's crime, we will be able to add attempted murder to his rap sheet." Commissioner Tisch confirmed the suspect's impending arrest.

Political Commentary on Immigration Policies

The incident quickly garnered national attention and ignited political debate, with President Donald Trump and CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott taking to social media to criticize current immigration policies.

President Trump posted, in part, "He was apprehended at the border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was released. The CBP officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous skill and courage."

Commissioner Scott echoed similar sentiments, stating, "This violent criminal never should've been on our streets. This is exactly why we fight every day to secure this nation." Mayor Adams confirmed he had spoken with Tom Homan, the president's border czar, who was en route to New York City.

Community Shocked by Violence in "Peaceful" Park

The shooting sent ripples of concern through the community, particularly among those who frequent Riverside Park, known for its serene atmosphere.

Marcelo Candeo, an Englewood, New Jersey resident, expressed his dismay, "It's very concerning. I was coming down here on the Greenway and I saw the crime scene. I'm very shocked and surprised. I hope he's doing well and he gets a full recovery."

Kips Bay resident Kovan Pillai also voiced his surprise, remarking, "This is the most peaceful part of New York I can find, so it's a shock to hear that anything like this happened."

Call for Public Assistance

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. Tips can also be submitted online through their website. All information provided will be kept confidential.
