August 17, 2026 NEW YORK, NY A violent Sunday afternoon domestic dispute in the heart of Manhattan’s Lower East Side escalated into a deadly police shooting, leaving one man dead, an elderly father injured, and a bustling neighborhood reeling in shock.

The chaos erupted just after 4:00 p.m. on August 16, when 7th Precinct officers flooded 126 Ludlow Street following a barrage of frantic 911 calls reporting an active assault. Upon entering the building, responding officers encountered a grim sight: a thick trail of blood leading up the central staircase.

As officers advanced up the steps, they met 54-year-old Wei Chan descending toward them, armed with a massive butcher knife.

Despite repeated shouted commands from officers ordering him to drop the weapon and show his hands, Chan continued his aggressive approach down the stairs, forcing police to make a split-second decision. Officers fired at least four rounds, striking Chan and bringing the standoff to a abrupt end.

Witnesses Recall Shocking Scene Outside Lower East Side Bar

Patrons at nearby establishments, including popular local spot Pretty Ricky’s, watched the terrifying aftermath unfold in real time as emergency responders swarmed the block.

Deborah Martins, visiting New York on her honeymoon, was inside the bar when gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet. She described seeing paramedics frantically administering CPR to a critically wounded man on a gurney while another bloodied victim was escorted out.

First responders rushed Chan to Bellevue Hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. Police confirmed that while Chan had no prior criminal record, NYPD files documented a history of mental health encounters.

Inside the residence, officers discovered Chan’s 75-year-old father, Cheung Chan, suffering from a severe laceration to the head. Emergency crews transported the elder Chan to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors expect him to survive.

Investigation Underway as Police Recover Weapon

Detectives and the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit quickly sealed off the intersection of Rivington and Ludlow Streets with crime scene tape, recovering the bloody butcher knife at the scene and processing the building for evidence. Two officers were also evaluated at an area hospital following the traumatic response.
