March 31, 2026 NEW YORK, NY New York City is notoriously expensive, but for the thousands of people who keep the "Big Apple" running, the cost of living just got a little lighter. In a whirlwind Monday announcement, Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a series of massive perks aimed at retaining city talent, from free toddler care in Lower Manhattan to a "free ride" for college degrees.
1. Free Child Care: A $20,000 Win for Families
Starting April 30, city employees can officially apply for the new free on-site child care pilot program located at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building.
While the previous administration teased a similar concept, Mamdani is putting real teeth—and real money—behind it. The city is carving out $2.3 million in the executive budget to run the site, which will offer full-day care for children aged 6 weeks to 3 years.
The "Mamdani Difference":
-
Expanded Eligibility: Unlike the original narrow pilot, this is open to every employee who works in the Dinkins Building, plus all DCAS employees citywide.
-
Massive Savings: The Mayor noted that this program can save a single family at least $20,000 a year.
-
Opening Date: The center is expected to open its doors this fall.
2. College on the House: The Undergraduate Expansion
In a move that caught many by surprise, the Mayor’s office also launched the city’s first-ever undergraduate scholarship program for full-time municipal workers.
A recent study found that nearly 50% of the city’s 100,000 employees do not hold an undergraduate degree. To bridge that gap, the city is partnering with powerhouse institutions like Columbia University, Fordham, and SUNY Purchase to fund associate’s and bachelor’s degrees.
"Our city moves when our workers do," Mamdani stated. "We are investing in a new generation of public servants."

Heroism at One Police Plaza
Later in the day, the tone shifted from kitchen-table economics to raw courage. At an NYPD promotion ceremony for 200 members, Mayor Mamdani and Commissioner Jessica Tisch took a moment to honor the officers who prevented a catastrophe at Gracie Mansion earlier this month.

Federal prosecutors allege that two individuals attempted to detonate ISIS-inspired explosive devices during a protest at the mayoral residence on March 7. Mamdani praised Chief Aaron Edwards and Sgt. Luis Navarro for "running toward danger" while others fled.
Safety by the Numbers:
-
1,000+ guns taken off the streets since January 1st.
-
Record Lows: The first two months of the year saw the lowest number of shooting incidents on record.
