August 6, 2025 A peaceful Bronx park became the scene of a tragedy Tuesday evening when a brawl among teenagers left one boy dead and another seriously injured.

Police were called to Williamsbridge Oval Playground in Norwood around 7:30 p.m. for reports of an assault. They arrived to find two teenagers suffering from multiple stab wounds. Fourteen-year-old Angel Mendoza had been stabbed several times throughout his body, and a 17-year-old, whose name has not been released, had wounds to his stomach and shoulder.

Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Mendoza died from his injuries. The 17-year-old is reported to be in stable condition.

A 15-Minute Brawl Shocks Community

The violence reportedly erupted during a 15-minute fight involving numerous teenagers near the park's benches. Witnesses told police that the brawl was chaotic and fast-moving. Several knives were recovered from the scene as police began their investigation, though the suspect remains at large.

The incident has left residents in the Norwood community stunned. Many describe the park, a popular spot for families, children's camps, and senior activities, as a safe haven. "This is like a family park with a bunch of kids running around," one witness told Eyewitness News, expressing surprise at the violence. "It's pretty much a safe park."
