January 2, 2026 While most of New York was toasting to new beginnings, a dark and cowardly act on a Queens street corner left one family planning a funeral and another praying for a birthday miracle.

A Walk Home Turned Into a Bloodbath

It was the early hours of New Year’s Day in Corona. Darwin Cargua, 25, and his friend Luis Romero were walking home from a holiday party, their hearts full of the promise of 2026. They never made it to their front doors.

As they crossed 102nd Street, a white SUV screamed through the intersection, slamming into both men with enough force to kill. Instead of slamming on the brakes, the driver chose a path of pure cowardice—accelerating into the night and leaving two young men broken on the asphalt.

A Birthday in the ICU

The tragedy carries a bitter irony that has devastated the local community. Today—Friday—should have been a day of celebration for Luis Romero. Instead of blowing out candles for his 25th birthday, Luis is currently in critical condition, fighting for every breath in a hospital bed.

His best friend, Darwin, wasn't as lucky. He died from his injuries, becoming one of the first tragic statistics of the New Year.

A Community in Mourning

Both victims were Ecuadorian immigrants who came to New York seeking the American Dream. This morning, that dream lay scattered on a Corona sidewalk among a growing mountain of white candles, vibrant flowers, and tear-stained photos.

“They were just walking home,” one local resident whispered through tears at the makeshift memorial. “How can someone just drive away?”

The Hunt for the White SUV

The NYPD is currently scouring the neighborhood for any "Ring" doorbell footage or commercial security video that might show the white SUV. As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made, and the driver remains a free man while a family prepares to bury a son.

The police are looking for a white SUV with significant front-end damage. If you saw a vehicle matching this description hidden in a driveway or being towed in the Queens area, your call could be the key to justice.

Do you have info on the white SUV? Call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). You can remain anonymous.
