Denise Jarvis, 62, and her daughter, Geneva Jarvis, 36, were marched out of the South Bronx precinct by detectives on July 30, facing the ultimate charge—murder. Their alleged victim? A vulnerable teenager who should have been protected by the very people who brought him into the world: 16-year-old Adonis Jarvis, a grandson and son.
A Slow, Agonizing Nightmare
According to police and court documents, the horror unspooled inside an apartment on East 147th Street, nestled between Brook and St. Ann’s Avenues in the South Bronx. There, authorities say the two women systematically deprived Adonis and his twin brother—both of whom are autistic and nonverbal—of the fundamental necessities required to sustain human life.
The nightmare finally broke into the open on or about March 19, when both brothers were rushed to the Pediatrics Department at Lincoln Hospital seeking emergency treatment. Medical professionals were immediately met with a scene of unimaginable cruelty.
According to published reports, both teenage boys exhibited profound signs of long-term malnourishment, severe starvation, and chronic neglect, with painful sores covering their fragile bodies.
Despite the frantic efforts of medical staff, the damage to Adonis was too severe. He succumbed to his horrific ordeal while undergoing treatment at the hospital. An autopsy performed by the Medical Examiner’s office later delivered a devastating and damning conclusion: Adonis had been starved to death.
Miraculously, his twin brother managed to survive the ordeal and recovered following medical intervention.
