New York City is doubling down on its commitment to electric mobility, announcing a significant expansion of Citi Bike e-bike charging infrastructure. Just a year after the initial pilot program, the city is adding more charging hubs to keep pace with the booming popularity of electric Citi Bikes.

Meeting Rider Demand with More Charging Options

"Expanding our network of charging stations means riders will have better access to fully charged bikes, with fewer delays and faster service," stated City Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. This move directly addresses the overwhelming demand for e-bikes, which now constitute a significant portion of all Citi Bike rides.

Lyft Electrifying Key Locations Across Brooklyn and Manhattan

Lyft, the operator of the Citi Bike program, will electrify 13 existing docking stations this spring. Brooklyn will see three new charging hubs at:

  • Graham Ave. and Grand St. (Williamsburg)
  • Metropolitan and Bedford Aves. (Williamsburg)
  • Clinton and Tillary Sts. (Brooklyn Heights)

Manhattan will gain ten new e-bike charging locations at:

  • Clinton and Grand Sts.
  • Amsterdam Ave. and W. 116th St.
  • York Ave. and E. 72nd St.
  • First Ave. and E. 14th St.
  • Kenmare and Elizabeth Sts.
  • Amsterdam Ave. and W. 66th St.
  • 11th Ave. and W. 59th St.
  • Broadway and W. 92nd St.
  • First Ave. and E. 30th St.
  • Sixth Ave. and W. 42nd St.

Moving Beyond Manual Battery Swaps

Currently, only two Citi Bike stations (one in Midtown and one in Williamsburg) offer integrated e-bike charging. The vast majority of the program's 15,000 e-bikes rely on manual battery swaps performed by technicians traveling across the city. The expansion of charging docks will streamline operations, reduce the need for these van trips, and most importantly, minimize downtime for e-bikes, ensuring more are readily available for riders.

E-Bike Popularity Soars in the Big Apple

Recent data from the city's Department of Transportation highlights the explosive growth of e-bike usage. Between the start of the year and April 30th, there were a staggering 7,891,166 electric Citi Bike rides – a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Even more telling is that these 7.9 million e-bike rides accounted for a remarkable 70% of all Citi Bike rides citywide, despite e-bikes making up only 43% of the total fleet.

A Win for Riders and the City

"With Citi Bike e-bike ridership continuing to break records, this investment will directly benefit riders by increasing availability of the Citi Bike e-bike that New Yorkers know and love," said Lyft spokeswoman Caroline Samponaro.

This expansion of e-bike charging infrastructure signifies a positive step towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation network in New York City, catering to the clear preference of riders for electric options. Get ready for more readily available, fully charged e-bikes at even more locations!
