November 5, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY A peaceful night in Sunset Park turned into a catastrophic nightmare early Thursday morning when a roaring 3-alarm fire swept through a Brooklyn residential building, claiming six lives and leaving nine others injured.
More than 230 firefighters and EMS personnel battled intense flames, heavy smoke, and structural collapses in what leaders are calling one of the neighborhood's deadliest fires in recent memory.
Inferno at 1:40 A.M.: Floor and Staircase Collapse
The blaze broke out around 1:40 a.m. inside a multi-story residential building on 58th Street in Sunset Park.
First arriving FDNY crews were met with a terrifying scene: the entire first and second floors were completely engulfed in roaring flames, with heavy, suffocating smoke pouring out of every window.
-
Rapid Escalation: The fire quickly surged to a 3-alarm response, bringing over 200 first responders to the scene.
-
Structural Collapse: The intense heat caused the second floor and the internal staircase to collapse entirely, trapping residents and creating deadly conditions for firefighters.
-
Building Exposure: High winds and intense heat caused the flames to leap to an adjacent neighboring building before firefighters could contain the fire.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Tragically, six lives were lost in the early morning blaze:
-
Fatalities at the Scene: Firefighters navigating the charred debris discovered four victims deceased inside the building.
-
Hospital Fatalities: Two additional victims were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition but succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
-
Injuries: Nine other individuals—including three firefighters and two police officers—were treated for injuries ranging from minor smoke inhalation to serious burns.
-
Displaced Residents: Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that eight surviving residents were displaced and provided temporary shelter at nearby hotels.
"An Immense Grief": City Hall Pledges Full Support
Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the scene on Thursday morning to meet with first responders and express condolences to the grieving community.
“This was a devastating fire,” Mayor Mamdani said. “It will take a long time for this neighborhood to mourn the neighbors they lost this morning and to recover from this immense grief, and as they do so and as we rebuild, the City of New York will be here for them every step of the way.”
Lithium-Ion Battery Found at Scene Under Investigation
While the official cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshal, specialized hazmat teams were called to the scene after discovering a lithium-ion battery inside the charred wreckage.

Fire officials noted that while finding micro-mobility devices inside NYC homes is common, investigators are working to determine whether thermal runaway from the battery sparked the fatal blaze.
This tragedy comes just over a week after another deadly battery fire in the Bronx, where a 10-year-old child died and four family members were critically injured after an e-scooter battery ignited inside their apartment.
