September 24, 2026 THE BRONX, NY Panic erupted in the West Concourse neighborhood of the Bronx early Wednesday morning as a ferocious two-alarm inferno roared through a six-story residential building, forcing one desperate man to plunge to the pavement below while another resident tragically lost their life.
What started as a routine morning inside 1484 Montgomery Ave. quickly descended into absolute chaos around 7:45 a.m., as thick black smoke and intense flames burst through windows, engulfing multiple apartments and rapidly mounting to the building's roof.
A Desperate Leap for Survival
As the blaze rapidly consumed the structure, residents were trapped inside a living nightmare with their escape routes choked off by fiery conditions.
According to police and FDNY officials, emergency crews arriving on the scene were greeted by a gut-wrenching sight: a 31-year-old man lying gravely injured on the sidewalk after leaping from an upper-floor window to escape the searing heat.
"When units arrived, there was one civilian on the sidewalk who they said had jumped out the window to escape the flames," FDNY Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier reported from the scene.
First responders rushed the critically injured survivor to Jacobi Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition with severe burns and impact injuries.
One Dead, Over a Dozen Injured as Flames Ravage the Building
As firefighters aggressively combated the escalating flames, the disaster took a horrific turn. Once the inferno was brought under control, search-and-rescue teams made a grim discovery inside the charred complex: an unidentified adult found unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead on the scene.
The devastating blaze did not stop there. The rapid spread of fire and toxic smoke left at least 10 other civilians injured. Four brave firefighters were also hurt while battling the intense conditions before bringing the two-alarm crisis under control.
Hidden Hazards and a Blocked Hydrant Fuel the Crisis
Investigating officials pointed to structural pathways inside the building that allowed the fire to spread at a terrifying pace throughout the structure.
"Most of the extension came from common bathroom wet walls, where pipes and electric run through; that was mostly the extension of the fire into adjoining and above apartments," Chief Holzmaier explained.
Compounding the emergency, firefighters encountered a dangerous obstruction upon arrival: a private vehicle parked illegally directly in front of the fire hydrant serving the building. The delay in hooking up vital water lines forced the FDNY to take immediate action.
