August 16, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY The quiet hours of a Brooklyn Sunday were violently shattered early this morning when a heated dispute erupted into gunfire, leaving a young woman dead and a man hospitalized with severe injuries.
According to law enforcement authorities, the bloodshed unfolded at approximately 2:23 a.m. near the intersection of Bergen Street and Howard Avenue. Officers from the 73rd Precinct flooded the area following frantic 911 reports indicating that a verbal altercation had escalated into a shooting.
Upon arrival, first responders encountered a grim scene. A 33-year-old woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the back, while a 34-year-old man lay nearby with a bullet wound to the abdomen. Emergency Medical Services rushed the female victim to One Brooklyn Health-One Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where medical staff fought desperately to save her life. Tragically, her injuries proved insurmountable, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her identity is currently being withheld pending family notification.
The male victim was transported to Kings County Hospital, where medical personnel report he is expected to survive his injuries.
As dawn broke, the NYPD Crime Scene Unit locked down the block, combing the pavement for ballistic evidence and placing yellow markers near a parked vehicle. Investigators are pouring over physical evidence and canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance footage that might shed light on the final moments before the shots rang out.
Police confirmed that two suspects fled the scene on foot immediately following the gunfire. As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains very active.
