The incidents, which occurred in the early morning hours of May 17th and 18th, have put residents of the vibrant SoHo and Greenwich Village neighborhoods on high alert.
The suspect, described as a lanky man, was captured on surveillance footage carrying a backpack and a paper shopping bag. His distinctive appearance is now central to the NYPD's ongoing investigation.
First Attack: Deceptive Approach in Greenwich Village
The first assault took place around 2:05 AM on Friday, May 17th, at the intersection of West Houston and MacDougal Streets, a bustling corner straddling the SoHo and Greenwich Village border. The 25-year-old victim was approached by the suspect, who cunningly used his cellphone, displaying a map, to ask for directions. Without warning, he then grabbed her breasts and waist before fleeing the scene.
Second Attack: Escalation on West Houston Street
Less than 24 hours later, the predator struck again. At approximately 1:50 AM on Saturday, May 18th, the suspect was back on West Houston Street, this time near Thompson Street. He targeted a 26-year-old woman, forcing her to the ground and molesting her over her clothing before escaping.
Both victims sustained minor injuries during the traumatic encounters, according to police reports.
NYPD Releases Surveillance Footage, Seeks Public's Help
As the investigation progresses, the NYPD has released surveillance footage of the suspect, hoping to leverage public assistance in identifying and apprehending him. The man in the footage is seen wearing glasses, a black jacket, black jeans, and white sneakers.
