March 30, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY A quiet morning in Brooklyn Heights was shattered by a stomach-turning act of hate that has left the local community reeling and the NYPD on a citywide manhunt.
The 4:30 AM Nightmare
On Monday, March 9, while most of the city slept, a predator of peace approached the Islamic Mission of America at 143 State Street. Law enforcement sources describe a scene of calculated disrespect that feels like a gut punch to the neighborhood.
According to investigators, the suspect first scattered torn pages of the Holy Quran—the sacred heart of the Islamic faith—across the front steps. But he wasn’t done. After briefly vanishing, he returned to smear a "foul substance" across the mosque’s doors.
Police have since confirmed the grim reality: the substance was feces. ### "Deeply Disturbing": The Community Reacts The 84th Precinct is currently treating this investigation as a Hate Crime. While no one was physically harmed, the psychological toll on the congregation is immense.
Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, released a blistering statement demanding justice:
"This reported act of attempted desecration is deeply disturbing and reflects a blatant act of hate targeting a house of worship... No community should have to fear harassment or attack because of their religious beliefs."
A Chilling Trend: Hate is Up 300%
While overall major crime in the 84th Precinct has actually dropped by nearly 10% this year, bias-motivated attacks are skyrocketing. The numbers tell a terrifying story:
-
Precinct Level: Hate crimes in this pocket of Brooklyn have surged from 1 last year to 4 already in 2026—a 300% increase.
-
Citywide: The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force reports a staggering 152% jump in bias incidents compared to last January.

Have You Seen This Man?
The NYPD has released a surveillance image of the individual they believe is responsible. The suspect was last seen sporting bright red clothing and carrying a tied black bag—the same bag likely used to transport the waste used in the attack.
Do not let this go unanswered. If you recognize the man in the photo or have any information regarding the events of March 9, your tip could be the key to off the streets.
