July 22, 2025 HARLEM, Manhattan – A bustling Monday evening in Harlem turned into a scene of chaos and fear when gunfire erupted, leaving one man injured and a 15-year-old in police custody. The dramatic incident, which unfolded just before 6:30 p.m. on Lenox Avenue, involved two suspects, one on a kick scooter and another on a Citi Bike, brazenly firing weapons between 114th and 115th streets.
The Anatomy of a Street Shooting
According to NYPD officials, a 30-year-old man was struck in the upper right thigh during the exchange. It remains unclear whether he was the intended target of the violence that rattled this vibrant uptown neighborhood.
The aftermath saw one of the armed suspects, riding a Citi Bike, make a swift escape. However, the 15-year-old accomplice, who had been on a scooter, ditched his ride and attempted to flee on foot.
Officer-Involved Shot and Quick Surrender
Alert officers, already positioned on Lenox Avenue, spotted the fleeing teen. What ensued was a tense confrontation. Police reports indicate that when the young suspect refused to drop his weapon, an officer discharged a single shot, which fortunately missed its mark.
"We don't know where those bullets are going, and that's the problem," recounted Trice Babii Thompson, a witness at a nearby restaurant who heard the initial shots and then observed the standoff between police and the suspect.
Following the officer's warning shot, the 15-year-old quickly surrendered. A firearm was recovered from the teen, who was unharmed in the incident.
Victim Stable, Community on Edge
Citizen App video captured the immediate aftermath, showing police officers applying a tourniquet to the wounded man's leg. He was transported to Mount Sinai Morningside and is reported to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the hunt continues for the second suspect, who, after opening fire, vanished on the Citi Bike.
Witnesses to the harrowing events described moments of sheer terror. "As they draw their guns, I made sure me and my sister hit the floor, because we were sitting right here," Thompson vividly recalled.
The incident has left residents shaken and weary. "It's really scary and makes people tired. Tired, you know," expressed neighbor Donna Robinson, echoing a sentiment of exhaustion with the persistent threat of street violence. "Tired of coming outside."
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspect and piece together the full scope of this alarming event.
