June 28, 2025 New York, NY – In a surprising turn, convicted former Long Island Congressman George Santos, who is facing a seven-year federal prison sentence starting July 25 for fraud and identity theft, is publicly appealing to his fellow Republicans to support New York City Mayor Eric Adams' re-election bid. Santos has taken to social media, urging GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa to withdraw from the race and for Republicans to rally behind Adams.

Santos argues that Adams is the strongest candidate to defeat what he calls "socialist Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani" in the upcoming November general election. "New Yorkers are at a crossroads, and the stakes couldn’t be higher,” Santos posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after former Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded to Mamdani in the Democratic mayoral primary. “The choice is clear: Eric Adams is the only viable path forward. Republicans, conservatives, and common-sense voters must recognize reality—Curtis Sliwa cannot win this race. Clinging to fantasy only helps the opposition.”

A Call for Coalition

The disgraced ex-congressman even suggested a "coalition" between Adams and Sliwa, similar to the one he referenced between Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump in the last presidential election. "Hey @NYCMayor,” Santos posted, “Call Curtis Sliwa and appoint him Deputy Mayor of public safety today and get a coalition going to save NYC!”

Candidates Respond

Despite losing the primary, former Governor Andrew Cuomo will still appear on the November ballot as an independent, as will Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent.

Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder and Republican candidate, has dismissed Santos's calls, stating firmly that

he is remaining in the race. Sliwa also heavily criticized Santos, calling him a "fraudster with no credibility."

Adams campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro also rejected Santos’s endorsement, emphasizing that Adams is "focused on building a broad, credible coalition rooted in integrity and results — not circus sideshows."
