January 13, 2026 The moving trucks have arrived, the Astoria lease is up, and New York City’s 111th mayor officially has a new set of keys.
On Monday, Jan. 12, Mayor Zohran Mamdani traded his Queens apartment for the historic 18th-century halls of Gracie Mansion. But if you think he’s planning to hide behind the wrought-iron gates of the Upper East Side, think again. From plumbing upgrades to "ghost hunting," here is everything happening inside the city’s most famous residence right now.
"The People’s House" is Getting an Upgrade
Mamdani was quick to tell reporters that he views himself as a "temporary custodian" of the mansion, not an owner. While the house has served as everything from an ice cream stand to a sewing workshop in the past, Mamdani wants to bring that public spirit back.
But while the mission is public, the domestic priorities are very specific. The Mayor confirmed two major additions coming to the mansion:
-
The Bidet Installation: In a move for modern hygiene, Mamdani confirmed he is installing bidets in the residence.
-
The Quest for a "First Cat": The Mayor is a known cat lover, but there’s a catch—he’s allergic. He revealed he is currently undergoing a series of allergy shots so he can finally bring a feline companion into the "People’s House."
Out With the Old, In With the New?
Reporters were dying to know: Did former Mayor Eric Adams leave a "welcome" note? "I haven't found it yet," Mamdani admitted.
He also addressed the staff at the mansion, praising the Parks Department for their tireless work over the last 12 days to get the estate ready. While he hasn't committed to keeping every tradition—like the standard cultural heritage nights—he promised that New Yorkers who "don't typically get invited inside" will soon see themselves reflected in the mansion's halls.
Still a Subway Rider?
Many wondered if the fancy new address would change the man. Mamdani insisted his MetroCard isn't going anywhere.
"I may be changing where I rest my head... but I will not be changing anything about how I interact with the incredible New Yorkers who call this city home."

He plans to continue using Citi Bike, buses, and the subway, rejecting the idea of retreating into a mayoral bubble. He even joked about the lack of a security deposit for the mansion, noting that back in Astoria, his old deposit is just covering his final month's rent.
Haunted Halls?
As for the legendary ghosts rumored to wander the Gracie Mansion corridors, the Mayor said he hasn't had any supernatural introductions just yet. But with his first night in the house happening this week, the spirits of New York’s past might have a new roommate to contend with.
The move is official, the bidets are on the way, and a new chapter for NYC has begun.
