May 20, 2026 NEW YORK, NY New York City water transit is about to get bigger, faster, and much more crowded.
With a historic global soccer spectacle looming and a relentless summer heatwave on the horizon, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration dropped a massive bombshell on Tuesday: the NYC Ferry system is officially unleashing the largest service expansion in its history.
Starting this week, the city and the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) are flooding New York Harbor with more ships, extra weekend trips, and high-capacity vessels to handle an unprecedented wave of local commuters and international tourists.
"The World Is Coming": Prepping for soccer Fever
The massive transit surge comes just ahead of Memorial Day weekend, but the true catalyst is the massive international crowd descending on the region for the highly anticipated World Cup final and its surrounding matches.
While the actual tournament games will be played across the Hudson River at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, New York City expects its hotels, restaurants, and waterfronts to be completely overrun with global soccer fans.
"The world is coming to New York City — and New York City is ready," Mayor Mamdani announced in a high-energy statement. "Whether you’re headed to a World Cup match, a neighborhood block party, or one of our world-class public beaches, NYC Ferry will get you there quickly, safely, and in style all summer long."
To mark the historic occasion, the city is even custom-wrapping five of its massive vessels in vibrant designs celebrating the global tournament and honoring each of the five boroughs.
Escape the Heat: The Return of the Rockaway VIP Rockets
For local New Yorkers just trying to survive the scorching summer temperatures, the biggest win is the return of the hyper-popular, express beach routes to the Rockaway Peninsula.
To help beachgoers bypass crushing gridlock and endless wait times, the city is bringing back its premium, seat-reservation options for $12 a ticket:
-
The Rockaway Reserve: Launching Saturday, May 23, this route lets you skip the lines with scheduled morning departures from Wall Street/Pier 11 and evening returns from Rockaway. It runs all weekends and select holidays through September 13.
-
The Rockaway Rocket: Launching in early July, this express rocket ship departs directly from Long Island City and Greenpoint, sailing straight through Labor Day.
Major Changes Coming to Your Regular Route
If you use the ferry for your daily commute or weekend exploring, you need to check your app immediately. The system is radically shifting its traditional grid to accommodate the summer rush.

The East River Shakeup
On weekdays, commuters are being warned to double-check their schedules as afternoon departure times have been altered. On weekends, the East River line is splitting into two completely separate routes to increase efficiency. Both start at Wall St/Pier 11 and DUMBO, and both end at East 34th Street—but they split the stops in between:
-
Route A: Stops at North Williamsburg and Hunters Point South.
-
Route B: Stops at South Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
Governors Island & South Brooklyn Boost
Exploring the city just got easier. NYC Ferry is launching dedicated weekend shuttle service to Governors Island, featuring completely free transfers from other connecting routes. Meanwhile, the South Brooklyn route is being extended on weekends from Red Hook all the way down to the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Bay Ridge.
A Summer Like Never Before
With the World Cup, the massive Sail4th 250 harbor celebration, and a peak beach season all colliding at once, the waterways are set to become New York's primary relief valve.
"We are providing more service than ever before," said NYC Ferry Executive Director James Wong. The historic summer schedule is officially live and will run through September 13. Secure your beach reservations early—this fleet is going to be packed.
