March 30, 2026 QUEENS, NY New York City’s most notorious jail has claimed another life, sparking a firestorm of outrage and desperate calls for the immediate shuttering of the facility. Just days after a 39-year-old man died following a frantic CPR attempt, 49-year-old John Price has become the latest name added to a grim and growing list.

The Final Hours of John Price

Details remain thin, but the timeline is chilling. Price, who was being held at the Eric M. Taylor Center, reportedly required "medical attention" on the evening of March 28. He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital at 5:30 p.m., but the intervention came too late. By 5:37 a.m. the following morning, he was pronounced dead.

The Department of Correction (DOC) is currently tight-lipped about what exactly happened to Price. No symptoms, no specific medical conditions, and no clear answers have been provided to the public.

A System Under Siege

This isn't an isolated tragedy—it’s a pattern. Price’s death comes a mere four days after Barry Cozart, 39, died at the George R. Vierno Center on the same island.

The political fallout is already hitting City Hall. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who built his platform on social justice and reform, took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer condolences, stating:

“Every person in our city’s care deserves dignity, safety and access to quality medical treatment, without exception.”

But for activists, "thoughts and prayers" are no longer enough. The city is officially behind schedule on its legally mandated plan to close Rikers Island, and the body count is rising.

The Growing Body Count

According to the Vera Institute of Justice, 15 people lost their lives in DOC custody in 2025 alone. As 2026 unfolds, the statistics are already looking grim.

Darren Mack, co-director of Freedom Agenda, leveled a blistering critique at the administration:

  • The Accusation: The jail complex will “continue to kill and harm” until the gates are locked for good.

  • The Demand: An immediate "diversion" of inmates through judges and prosecutors to get people out of "life-threatening conditions."

  • The Fix: A massive shift in the Executive Budget toward mental health care and low-barrier housing instead of incarceration.

What Happens Now?

A massive web of oversight is now descending on the island. The federal monitor, the State Attorney General, and the Department of Investigation have all been notified. While the city navigates the red tape of federal oversight, families are left wondering who will be next.

John Price was facing charges including drug trafficking and weapons possession—but as advocates point out, a jail sentence shouldn't be a death sentence.
