May 14, 2026 BRONX, NY The end of the line for the southbound 1 train became the end of a life early Wednesday morning, leaving a Queens man in handcuffs and investigators piecing together a fatal, "bizarre" confrontation.

A Violent Wake-Up Call

At approximately 3:00 a.m., as the city slept, the quiet of the 242 Street-Van Cortlandt Park station was shattered. Keith Plummer, a 68-year-old resident of Jamaica, Queens, was reportedly catching some shut-eye in a nearly empty subway car.

According to police sources, the peace was broken by an unidentified man—believed to be homeless—who began acting erratically as the train reached its final stop. The man, armed with a cane, reportedly targeted the sleeping Plummer.

From Altercation to Tragedy

What began as a strange provocation quickly escalated into a desperate struggle. Sources indicate the victim either poked or struck Plummer with the cane, prompting the 68-year-old to spring into action.

During the ensuing scuffle, Plummer allegedly pinned the man to the floor of the train car. The physical stress of the encounter proved too much; the victim suffered a sudden medical episode and went into cardiac arrest while pinned down.

The Aftermath

Responding officers from the 50th Precinct and NYPD Transit District 3 arrived to find the victim unconscious and unresponsive on the floor. While EMS rushed the man to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, medical staff were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

While the incident may have started as an act of defense or a reaction to provocation, the legal consequences for Plummer have been swift. Following a preliminary investigation by the NYPD, Keith Plummer was officially charged with manslaughter on Wednesday afternoon.

As the investigation continues, the identity of the deceased remains unknown, and the city is once again forced to reckon with the volatile nature of late-night transit.
